Shopify runs the store — products, variants, inventory, checkout. Contentful runs the content — buying guides, landing pages, campaign copy, anything that needs more editorial structure than a product description field allows. Brands that lean on both end up with the same product details typed twice: once in Shopify as the commerce record, once in Contentful as part of a shoppable guide or merchandising entry. The two drift the moment a price or stock level changes on one side and nobody updates the other. This guide covers how to sync Contentful and Shopify without code, in either direction.
Why sync Contentful with Shopify
Contentful and Shopify solve different problems, and most teams running both want them to share data instead of duplicating it by hand:
- Shoppable content without manual copy-paste. Editors build gift guides, lookbooks, or campaign pages in Contentful that reference live Shopify products — title, price, image, availability — without re-typing product details into a content entry.
- Shopify as the commerce source of truth. Product and inventory data stays owned by Shopify; Contentful entries pull current values instead of a snapshot that goes stale after the next price change or restock.
- Editorial content enriching product pages. Merchandising copy, size guides, or long-form product storytelling authored in Contentful can sync back into Shopify as metafields, so the storefront reflects content work without a developer wiring it up each time.
A one-off export from Shopify into a Contentful entry works for a single campaign launch. It stops working once prices or stock levels change daily, which they do on any active store.
What you need before you start
- A Shopify store with admin access to Products (and variants, if relevant).
- A Contentful space with a content type shaped to hold the synced data — fields for title, price, image, and a reference back to the Shopify product ID.
- A Synquake account — sign up free at app.synquake.com.
No developer, no custom Contentful app, and no Shopify app-store integration to maintain. Synquake connects to the Shopify and Contentful APIs directly.
Step-by-step: connecting Contentful and Shopify
1. Connect both accounts
Add Shopify and Contentful as connections in Synquake. Shopify authorizes through OAuth; Contentful authorizes with a space API token. Neither side requires passing credentials around the team manually.
2. Choose what to sync
Decide which Shopify object maps to which Contentful content type — most stores start with Products (and variants) mapping to a Contentful “Product” or “Shoppable Item” content type that editorial pages reference.
3. Map fields visually
Draw the connections between Shopify fields (title, price, SKU, inventory quantity, tags, images) and Contentful fields (short text, number, reference, media). Field types don’t need to match exactly up front — Synquake handles the conversion, including Shopify images mapping to Contentful’s media field.
4. Choose sync direction
Pick one-way (Shopify → Contentful, the common case when Shopify stays the system of record for commerce data) or two-way sync, so merchandising copy edited directly in Contentful pushes back to Shopify as metafields. Two-way sync is included on every Synquake plan, not a paid upgrade.
5. Preview before going live
Run a preview sync against a handful of real products first. Confirm prices, stock status, and images land in the correct Contentful fields before enabling continuous sync.
6. Turn on live sync
Once the preview checks out, enable scheduled or real-time sync. From here, a price change or restock in Shopify flows into the referencing Contentful entries automatically, with no manual re-entry step.
Common Contentful–Shopify sync scenarios
- Shoppable editorial content. Gift guides, lookbooks, and buying-guide entries in Contentful reference live Shopify product data instead of hardcoded prices that go stale after the next sale.
- Multi-channel storefronts. The same Shopify catalog feeds a Contentful-powered marketing site alongside the Shopify theme itself, so campaign pages and the store never disagree on price or availability.
- Merchandising copy from content teams. A content team writes rich product storytelling in Contentful; that copy syncs into Shopify metafields so it surfaces on the actual product page without a developer involved.
- Pre-launch campaigns. New product entries can be modeled and written up in Contentful before the product goes live in Shopify, then linked once the Shopify listing is published.
Avoiding common sync problems
- Stale pricing on content pages. If a Contentful entry stores a copied price instead of referencing the synced field, it won’t update automatically — map campaign pages to the live synced field, not a one-time paste.
- Variant mismatches. Map Shopify variants (size, color) to a consistent Contentful structure before enabling two-way sync — mismatched variants are the most common source of a guide page showing the wrong option.
- Image handling. Shopify product images sync as URLs; confirm the Contentful side is configured to pull them into its own media field rather than leaving a broken reference.
- Duplicate entries. Set a stable matching field (the Shopify product ID) so re-running a sync updates the existing Contentful entry instead of creating a new one each time.
Beyond Contentful and Shopify
Synquake’s sync is any-to-any across nine platforms — Airtable, Webflow, WordPress, Supabase (including Lovable-built apps), Wix, Shopify, Squarespace, Google Sheets, and Contentful — plus CSV import on every plan. The same Shopify catalog you sync with Contentful can also feed a Webflow CMS Collection or an Airtable base for internal merchandising planning, without building a separate integration for each. See the full integrations page for details, or read how it works for the connection, mapping, and monitoring model.
